Accolades to Evelyn McWilliams on Her Retirement
So many of our members equate MHEDA with Evelyn. In a world of change, Evelyn McWilliams has been a constant resource providing information, facilitating peer-to-peer networking and communicating with an optimism not readily found in others. As one of the most senior members of the MHEDA team, Evelyn has worn many hats. During the Dan Reilly days, Evelyn served as Dan's right-hand person and dealt with a myriad of daily details and office management issues. She went on to work for two more directors, Tony Colletti 1994, followed by me in 1995. Her responsibilities have changed over the years, and today Evelyn serves as the Communications Manager and staff liaison to the Networking Committee. Evelyn has been the catalyst for the growth of MHEDA-NET, one of the most important services and benefits of MHEDA membership. Over 100 members belong to MHEDA-NET groups thanks to Evelyn's dedication to and management of this program.
Thankfully, I was able to lean on Evelyn during my early years at MHEDA as she provided continuity, support and an incredible level of knowledge about the association. When Evelyn told me everything was going to be okay, I believed her! Evelyn's mark has been indelibly left on MHEDA. We will all miss her enthusiasm and upbeat attitude. Happy retirement to a great friend and colleague! |

Evelyn and Superman Save the Day
For many years, when I did presentations for MHEDA, Evelyn was my primary administrative help and contact. Together, we presented many successful MHEDA events. In our very first seminar together, I presented for about five hours, then took a break while another speaker took over for a planned 1 1/2-hour presentation. I went to my hotel room to restand to change into my Superman costume, to close the presentation that day with a ... flourish.
About a half-hour into the presentation, the room phone rang. It was Evelyn. At first she sort of hemmed and hawed-then said, You better get Superman down here soon-this presenter is losing the audience fast. I quickly rejoined Evelyn in the seminar room; sure enough, the speaker was methodically putting them to sleep. Evelyn and I quickly called a break, thanked and excused the speaker. Then, I undressed. Revealing Superman, of course.
That was the beginning of a great relationship. Professional relationship. Thanks, Evelyn! |

As a MHEDA president, I was asked to be involved with meetings, speaking engagements, the Convention, etc., and Evelyn would always be available to help with the utmost confidence, which made me feel comfortable in whatever I was asked to do. At educational seminars or Convention, she worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make everything come off seamlessly and made sure each member felt special. Evelyn did not view her years with MHEDA as a job, but as an extension of her family. For that I know I will always be grateful not only for what she did for me, but most important what she did for the MHEDA family. |
