ORGAN DONATION
Thanks for allowing me to promote organ donation in my Fourth Quarter article, “Ya Gotta Have Heart.” I've already had some kind comments from readers.

I attended my first transplant support group meeting at the hospital and will take an active role in the group, as well as in the Southwest Transplant Alliance, the non-profit organ procurement agency that works with my hospital. In the article, I mentioned that most states allow individuals to become donors online. Had I known the exact procedure, I would have mentioned it therein. I learned it at the meeting.

All that must be done is to go to www.donatelife.net, click on your state and fill in the blanks. This registry is the one used by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS, the quasi-governmental federal agency responsible for ensuring fairness in the assignment of donated organs). Even if a person thinks he or she has already registered elsewhere, utilizing this spot will make certain.

As a result of my good fortune receiving this new heart, I owe a debt of gratitude that can't be repaid. I'm on a mission to attempt to repay it regardless.
